Rep. Camp: 2.8 Million Uncounted Unemployed

Rep. Dave Camp (R-Mich.), top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee yesterday released information revealing the undercounting scheme used by the Obama administration to mask true unemployment numbers in their latest 9.5% unemployment claims.

This raises a very interesting question: How can employment and the unemployment rate both be falling at the same time?

One Response to Rep. Camp: 2.8 Million Unemployed Uncounted: Human Events

  1. This isn’t actually some sort of conspiracy on the part of the Obama administration. Marginally attached workers, in particular, discouraged workers are omitted from the unemployment numbers. This can lead to the odd coincidence of both a monthly bump in the number of first time unemployment claims and a falling unemployment rate. Perhaps a better metric to use is the employment ratio which is available on the St Louis Fed’s FRED graphs.
